Arriving in the Big (Canadian) City

One month ago, I moved to Toronto to attend Humber College’s ‘Comedy: Writing and Performance’ program and after realizing that I couldn't fit all the adventures, experiences, and overall fun I've had since moving to Toronto into a single Facebook status, I decided to create a blog! This blog to be more precise! Oh boy, I've only written two sentences so far and they've both ended in exclamation marks. That's a sure sign that this is going to be an exciting blog!

I arrived at Toronto's Pearson International Airport on September 1. Upon arrival, I was greeted by my lovely older sister, Meags, who was there to help me settle in. After waiting for and retrieving my luggage (Note: The NHL's 2010 first overall draft pick and super hunk, Taylor Hall, was waiting beside us), we got in a taxi and were off to the place that would become my new home for the next eight months. Our destination was the basement suite of a large house on the west side of Toronto, not two minutes from the Humber Lakeshore Campus, where I go to school. The suite was found by my excellent roommate and friend, Dayna.

Now, moving into a rental space on the first of a month, especially the first of September (the day/month that students move in), you would think that the place would be empty… nope! As Meags and I arrived and prepared to bring my stuff in, Dayna, who had moved in two days before, warned us that there was a tenant who hadn’t moved out yet still living down there.

The late-to-get-out-of-there tenant was a twenty year old male taking a year off from Humber Collage, by the name of… Actually, he never told Dayna his name, nor Meags and I when we introduced ourselves to him. Instead, he chose to sit on his couch, play his PlayStation 3 and, tell us what objects were his. He then chose to continue to play his PlayStation as we moved in all my stuff, which was inconvenient for all of us because we had to walk in front of his TV to get to my room and the kitchen, two areas of the house I'm sure he once considered his own.

We later found out his name by reading it off his old student card. It was Brian. While, I only got to spend just a mere day and a half with Brian, I’ll cherish our beloved time together forever. Oh, also, he was a HUGE pothead, had his disgustingly dirty bong in the wide open on the kitchen table, and left the place reeking of weed. I can’t say how glad I am that Thomas (my second roommate) replaced him.

Moving for the first time was quite the experience and I’m pleased to have it under my belt. I'm also very grateful for the help I received from everyone during those first few days, especially my sister Meags for the crap-ton she did for me.
